**Alan Weitzman, a legendary advertising executive,** award-winning creative director, and founder of one of the mid-Atlantic’s most influential agencies, died. His death marks the passing of a creative voice whose work helped put Washington-area advertising on the national and international stage. He was approximately 85 years old.

Born in London, England, Weitzman, founded his agency in 1974, launching what would become a decades-long career defined by bold ideas and pursuit of what is now commonly referred to as storytelling. Founded in Bethesda, the firm initially operated as Weitzman, Dym & Associates and later Weitzman Dym Livingston before relocating to Church Circle in Annapolis, where it became known as Weitzman Agency.

An award-winning copywriter, Weitzman was widely respected for creative work that balanced originality with strategic discipline. His honors included two Gold CLIO Awards—among the industry’s most coveted distinctions, including what was widely cited as the first Gold CLIO ever awarded to a Washington, D.C.-area agency.

Beyond advertising, Weitzman’s creative interests were expansive. He was a published songwriter and exhibited photographer, and his work and perspective reached audiences well beyond the agency world. He was quoted in TIME and BusinessWeek and served as a contributing writer to The Profit Makers. He was also a member of the Country Music Association, the Nashville Songwriters Association, and the Naval and Military Club in London.

In 2014, Weitzman received the Silver Medal Award from the DC Ad Club, in collaboration with the American Advertising Federation. The honor recognizes one individual each year who has made outstanding contributions to the advertising industry while advancing creative excellence, professional standards and social responsibility. Recipients are recognized not only for their creative ability, but also for their impact on the industry, their organizations, and the broader community.

Throughout his career, Weitzman was known as both a demanding creative and a generous mentor, shaping the careers of countless writers, art directors, and strategists who passed through his agency’s doors.
