**Dow Jones & Co. is suing Cision US Inc.** for bowing out of a novel, exclusive licensing deal in breach of what was supposed to be an eight-year-long contract, according to a [complaint](https://aboutblaw.com/beQJ?ref=capitolcommunicator.com) filed in New York state court, reports BloombergLaw.

According to BloombergLaw, “Cision paid $8.8 million for the first year of the nearly $174 million contract that gave the media monitoring company the exclusive right to distribute Dow Jones proprietary information to public relations and corporate communications professionals, the complaint says. Last month, Cision allegedly told Dow Jones it would stop making payments because the partnership wasn’t economically viable and that it had already lost out on $6.5 million because of the business relationship.

“Dow Jones says the contract doesn’t allow Cision to unilaterally decide to stop making payments.

“The agreement, which both companies signed in June 2023, gave Cision exclusive rights to distribute proprietary content, including information available on Factiva.com, the DJ Newswires, Wall Street Journal, Barrons, MarketWatch, and Investor’s Business Daily, the complaint says.

It represented a “significant shift in Dow Jones’s business approach,” the complaint says.

“For the first time, Dow Jones would agree to make a single media-monitoring service the exclusive third-party home of Dow Jones’s Proprietary Content for this market, and thereby bestow upon Cision an advantage in the market for public relations and corporate communications professionals,” Dow Jones wrote.

“Dow Jones wants Cision to pay the $173,624,000 that it allegedly agreed to pay in installments over the eight-year contract term.”
