May AM AdBuzz: Marketing Strategy at SXSW

Are you looking for a way to jump start your morning? Join us for AM AdBuzz, our monthly morning series! Get the inside scoop of where industries are heading and what it means for you. Join us each month for a quick talk on what’s next with advertising trends and how to make better decisions for you and your clients, while staying up to date with the AAF DC and networking with our elite memberhsip base!

Attending a tradeshow like SXSW can be a huge undertaking for a small marketing department, but it can also produce huge returns. What’s the best way to strategize the time and money spent attending and exhibiting at tradeshows?

At this month’s Am Ad Buzz, we will hear from a panel of marketing experts about their recent trip to SXSW and the approach they took to make the trip a success. From paid and organic social media, to lead generation and follow up, to what metrics are needed to measure success, the panelists will walk us through their process and teach you some tips of the trade to succeed at trade show marketing.

Plus, hear about some of the exciting developments discussed at SXSW, including sports, technology and entertainment.

About the Panelists:

Julie Weber, Director, Corporate Communications, Scoop News Group

At the Washington DC Economic Partnership, where she worked until May 2016, Julie led the evaluation, development, management, and execution of WDCEP’s marketing and communications strategies to position Washington, DC as the best place to do business. Prior to joining WDCEP, Ms. Weber served as the Director of Client Relations at MBOX Communications, a Washington, DC-based marketing agency for seven years and previously worked as the Director of Marketing at the Georgetown Business Improvement District.

Her extensive marketing, communications, social, creative strategies, and public relations background provides a wealth of expertise in creating and executing marketing, brand, communications, and media strategies to capture attention, generate awareness, and shape consumer behavior. Originally from Kentucky, Ms. Weber is a DC resident, avid reader, world traveler, foodie, arts enthusiast, and lover of music. She serves as a communications volunteer for several art events and organizations including FIGMENT DC. She holds a degree from George Mason University in English, Creative Writing.

Damelia Shaw

Damelia Shaw worked with the Washington DC Economic Partnership from 2014 until May of 2016, where she led the execution of WDCEP’s three signature events and development of partner and sponsor programs.

Prior to joining WDCEP, Damelia served as Senior Partnerships & Alliances Marketing Manager for Destination DC, the official destination marketing organization for Washington, DC. In her role, she was responsible for forming partnerships on a national and regional level working with organizations including American Express, Amtrak and various airline partners.

A native Washingtonian, Damelia holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland, College Park and received her Master’s in Marketing Management from the University of Maryland-University College.

Chris Lester, Principal & Chief Creative Officer, CHIEF

Chris Lester leads CHIEF’s strategic and creative initiatives bringing his unique vision and energy to building brands that shape perceptions and create powerful outcomes. As founder of the CHIEF brand and strategic lead on significant global engagements, Mr. Lester serves as a strategic brand advisor to leading boards and executive teams worldwide.

He has been instrumental in brand development for Disney, Newman’s Own Foundation, Sandals Resorts, Hilton, General Wesley Clark, YWCA, Howard University, among others. His belief that brands must be simple to be understood, believed in to motivate, governed to stay true and trustworthy to be worthwhile guides every aspect of his work.
