Volunteers Needed for a Celebration of Service

September 11, 2016

To commemorate the 15th anniversary of September 11th and bring generations together to help combat poverty, AARP Foundation is working with the Corporation for National and Community Service and 9/11 Day of Service, in A Celebration of Service 2016, to bring together thousands of volunteers from a wide range of ages together for a day of action on the National Mall to combat senior poverty and hunger in the metropolitan area. The goal is to celebrate volunteers and community service and to pack 1.5 million meals to help combat poverty among the area’s residents, including struggling seniors.

Washington, D.C., has more than 15,000 older adults who are struggling with poverty, and 13.4% of the D.C. households are classified as food-insecure — among the highest rates in the country. For the 1.5 million meals packed during this Celebration of Service, AARP Foundation will work with the Capital Area Food Bank to distribute the meals across the D.C. metro area. The packaged meals are flavorful, nutritious and have an extended shelf life of two years.

This event takes place Sept. 11 and Sept. 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on the National Mall, and pays tribute to the service commitment that is now such an important part of September 11th. Volunteers can pack for a little as 90 minutes or as many as eight hours. All volunteers will receive commemorative t-shirts for participating.

In groups of about 12, volunteers will work together packing meals, assembly line-style.
