**Kathleen Matthews, Marriott International’s chief global communications and public affairs officer,** has resigned from the senior communications post she’s held since 2006.

According to [The Washington Post](http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/md-politics/kathleen-matthews-quits-marriott-edging-closer-to-congressional-run/2015/05/20/6b960db4-ff1a-11e4-8b6c-0dcce21e223d%5Fstory.html?ref=capitolcommunicator.com), Matthews, 61, reportedly told friends in March that she was interested in running for the seat in the House of Representatives being vacated by **Rep. Chris Van Hollen**, who is vying to succeed retiring **U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski**.

A letter sent to Marriott executives by **Arne Sorenson,** president and chief executive, said Matthews “has announced she will leave the company in June to seek a challenging new role in public service.”

Her spokesperson, veteran Democratic political consultant **Anita Dunn,** said she is leaving “to pursue other opportunities that will be very clear” in the next few weeks.

Matthews, the wife of MSNBC host **Chris Matthews**, is a former television news anchor in D.C.
