**The Wikipedia Chaos Index is at 65 for the month of August**, **a modest 3% increase from July.**

New page submissions continue to be at historically high levels, leading to lots of AfC submissions, activity, and rejected pages (the most we’ve seen rejected since December 2023, in fact). Thankfully, there’s only been a slight uptick in the queue time for new pages; after seeing a significant reduction in wait times in July, the trend continues in August, leading to faster decisions on approvals and rejections for new pages.

On Monday, August 11, the United Kingdom High Court dismissed the Wikimedia Foundation’s challenge to parts of the country’s Online Safety Act, a decision that could potentially have lasting impacts on the platform, particularly for English language editors based in the UK.

Under the new Category 1 characterization Wikipedia would fall under, the website would require its users’ identities to be verified – something Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation have fought for years to avoid. Given the scrutiny and threats anonymous editors already face, from other users, unregistered editors, and increasingly, various governments and organizations around the world, this could be extremely problematic.

Though the ruling judge noted Wikimedia Foundation could bring further challenges if it is decided they are not under this specific new category, representatives and advocates alike are concerned that the rules of the new safety act are being implemented too broadly, resulting in censorship and decreased protections for free speech.

*The Chaos Index is our proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.*
