**In May 2026, the Wikipedia Chaos Index dropped slightly to 87, moving out of the Critical range, where it remained the last few months, and into the High range.** The platform remains highly volatile, so our advice remains unchanged: this isn’t the time to publish new drafts, update controversial content, or engage in debates with editors.

The slight decline in the Chaos Index can be attributed to a slight slowdown generally across the platform; however, this month did see an increase in COI noticeboard activity and in articles nominated for deletion, a sign that high-level, experienced editors remain incredibly active, and punitive, in 2026.

Though most metrics of activity were down this month, the overall amount of edits actually increased month-to-month. This suggests that a lot of minor edits are happening across the platform, which typically follows minute changes in formatting or an increase in editorial bot activity.

Following a Board of Trustees decision confirmed by member Victoria Doronina on March 30, all Wikinews language editions were locked into read-only mode beginning May 4, ending editing and new content creation across the project. Launched in November 2004, Wikinews had operated across 31 languages with just over 700 active editors at the time of closure, a footprint the Foundation’s Sister Projects Task Force ultimately judged insufficient relative to maintenance burden and strategic fit.

Though seemingly a small decision made to end a struggling project, the ripple effect is significant, as it marks the first major closure of a Wikimedia sister project in its history. As expected, the March 30 Signpost article noting its closure drew tons of discussion: though many agreed with the project’s decline in activity, the procedural floor for closing other projects was effectively established with this vote. Criticism was also leveled against the Foundation, with some editors calling the vote “pre-determined” and the preceding consultation performed to be inadequate, while others noted that other, less active projects (like Wikispecies) were continuing, setting an imperfect precedent, one that will no doubt fuel discussion and controversy on Wikipedia throughout the year.

NOTE: The Chaos Index is a proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments..
