And now a new survey by Pew Research Center puts some hard numbers behind the idea that podcasts are no longer just an entertainment medium, reports Inside Radio.

The new Pew data shows that a third (32%) of U.S. adults say they get news from podcasts at least sometimes, a sharp rise from 22% in 2020\. Nearly four in ten adults under 50 report getting news from podcasts at least sometimes, far outpacing the 24% of those 50 and older who do the same. But across all age groups, the share of adults who get news from podcasts has grown since 2020.

According to Inside radio: “The gains for news podcast listening come as Pew sees more people listening to podcasts. Overall, 54% of Americans say they have listened to a podcast in the past year, up from 49% in 2022, when Pew first began asking the question. The research firm says younger people are far more likely to listen to podcasts, with two-thirds (67%) of those 18 to 29 saying they listened to a podcast in the past 12 months vs. just one-third (33%) of those 65 and older.

“The findings also highlight demographic divides. Men (35%) are somewhat more likely than women (28%) to get news via podcasts. Black (35%) and Hispanic (33%) adults are more likely than White adults (30%) to use podcasts for news, while college graduates report higher usage rates than those with less formal education. Still, only 6% of U.S. adults overall say podcasts are their preferred way to get news.”
