# Tech culture columnist Taylor Lorenz exits WaPo to launch magazine

**Taylor Lorenz, a Washington Post technology columnist, is leaving the paper** to launch a new publication on Substack, bringing to a close a 2½-year stint, reports The Post.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Lorenz said: “I just wanted to get out of legacy media. I feel like it’s just really, really difficult to do the kind of reporting that I want to do on the internet within these kind of older institutions as a primary job.” She added: “I like to have a really interactive relationship with my audience. I like to be very vocal online, obviously. And I just think all of that is really hard to do in the roles that are available at these legacy institutions.”

Lorenz will launch User Mag on the Substack newsletter platform, which, states The Post, has become home to a number of notable writers in recent years, including Bari Weiss, Matthew Yglesias and Alison Roman. She said it will cover “the people and movements that are steering tech and internet culture,” and will initially be staffed solely by her.Lorenz’s announcement comes six weeks after a controversy stemming from Lorenz’s attendance on Aug. 14 at a White House Creator Economy Conference, an event focused on digital issues.

On Substack, writers and creators can publish their work and make money from paid subscriptions while readers can directly support the work that they deeply value.
