“A columnist since 2018, Theresa has found hidden local gems and broadened national conversations… (and many) of her columns have spurred action. After she wrote about a baby who [went four months without a name](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/05/27/baby-without-name-dc/?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) because of bureaucracy, that child [got a birth certificate](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/06/10/baby-justyce-name/?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) — and tens of thousands in donations from impassioned readers. After she wrote about a Virginia organization that was helping to [fulfill children’s needs](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/a-5-year-old-wanted-a-birthday-party-a-17-year-old-needed-funeral-clothes-both-were-among-the-wishes-this-virginia-group-granted/2019/03/08/11f8a5ba-41fa-11e9-9361-301ffb5bd5e6%5Fstory.html?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) in a dignified way, so many donations came in that the organization was able to [expand its reach](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/ive-been-in-tears-for-days-a-virginia-organization-that-helps-poor-children-will-now--because-of-you--reach-even-more/2019/03/20/17dee38c-4b22-11e9-93d0-64dbcf38ba41%5Fstory.html?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) to other states. After she wrote about why the public [didn’t receive an alert](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/11/01/rashawn-williams-public-alert-gap/?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) when a man with Down syndrome went missing, her column was read aloud by a lawmaker at a [hearing](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/03/06/missing-person-purple-alert-rashawn-williams/?itid=lk%5Finline%5Fmanual%5F9&ref=capitolcommunicator.com) for a bill that called for creating a new alert in Maryland to cover individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That bill was recently signed into law.”
