**Capitol Communicator is running “Up Close and Personal” profiles** of communicators in the mid-Atlantic. In this profile we feature **Jeff Campagna**. Photography for the series is by award-winning [**Cade Martin**](https://cademartin.com/?ref=capitolcommunicator.com), wardrobe styling by Pascale Lemaire and Sybil Street for THE Artist Agency; and hair and makeup by Patti D Nelson, Janice Kinigopoulos and Lori Pressman for THE Artist Agency.

**Jeff, please provide us a short bio.**

I’m a photo editor at *Smithsonian* magazine, and I’ve been there since 2004\. We can cover things from C-3PO, to grizzly bears, to the pyramids, which keeps things interesting. I love collaborating with imaginative photographers at work and playing piano and guitar at home when I’ve got the time. And I may be addicted to Instagram.

**Are you involved in any other organizations?**

I do photography portfolio reviews for different organizations, like Women Photojournalists of Washington (WPOW) and International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), but you know, this is a good reminder that I need to follow through and volunteer more!

**What is the things you are most proud of?**

Professionally, I’m very proud of the extremely creative work my colleagues and I do at *Smithsonian* magazine each month. And personally, I’m immensely proud of my wonderful wife, who just made a bold career switch from lobbyist to pastry chef. Naturally, I’m her official taster.

**Who are your personal role models?**

I have to say my role models were my parents. I admire them for working hard without complaining and always finding time for me. And I’m glad they made me practice the piano.

**Did your parents offer you advice that helped you in your career?**

I can’t recall any specific piece of advice, just that they instilled a general sense of responsibility, and encouraged me to learn about a wide range of subjects. Though I do remember my dad giving me a copy of “Dress for Success” when I got out of college so I could be as stylin’ as possible.

**What professional advice do you have for others?**

Be punctual, responsible and kind.

**What’s on your Spotify and Pandora playlists?**

No Spotify or Pandora for me, but I’ve recently been rocking out to some Beastie Boys, Mark Richter and The Strohs on my iPod Classic.

**What’s your favorite restaurant?**

I’m originally from New Jersey, so my wife will tell you I’m a bit of a pizza fanatic. I love Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana out in Gaithersburg. It’s an hour away for me, but their margarita pizza with the chewy yet charred crust is oh-so-worth it.

**Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?**

My cat is my alarm clock.
