# Up Close and Personal: Getting to Know Maggie Winters Gaudaen, Art Director at ISL

**Capitol Communicator is running a series** featuring in-depth profiles of communicators in the mid-Atlantic. In this “Up Close and Personal” profile, we feature **Maggie Winters Gaudaen**. **Maggie, please provide us a short bio.**

From a new car launch for [Volkswagen](https://isl.co/case-studies/vw/?ref=capitolcommunicator.com) to prototyping a new [sexual health product](http://maggie.is/the-it-kit-sex-education-prototype?ref=capitolcommunicator.com), as an Art Director at ISL, I get to be right in the middle of all kinds of fascinating advertising and design problems. Most recently, I’ve worked with a team crafting the brand strategy for a new credit card launch — and I’m now neck deep in a project involving lots of puppies. Needless to say, I love my job 🙂

**What are the things you are most proud of?**

My partner and I started a giant house renovation project a couple years ago — it’s slow going but so fun to see the house start to take shape. We finally have a kitchen table!

**Who were your personal role models?**

On a celebrity level, **RBG** is a total inspiration. She’s still doing what she loves at a pretty damn old age — one of the smartest people on the planet who’s completely unafraid to share her opinion – and has the arguing skills to back her opinions up.

On a personal level, I had a great photography teacher, **Allen Beland**, in high school who always taught me to question everything authority figures said, to never stop learning and to always stay in touch with your inner kid (it makes life way more fun).

**What professional advice do you have for others?**

If you don’t believe in a company’s or a client’s mission — don’t do the work. Advertising and design are powerful tools, and if we all try to use them for good (or at least, not for evil) the world will slowly become a better place.

**What’s on your Spotify and Pandora playlists?**

If it’s not 2-tone ska, which it usually is, I’m usually listening to psychobilly or oi!

**What’s your favorite restaurant?**

I’m a huge fan of H Street, because we live over there, and it’s pretty much the best. But, growing up my favorite restaurant was Fortune (out in Seven Corners), because their Vegetarian Noodles are the most delicious pile of fried food you could imagine.
