**Capitol Communicator is running a series** featuring an in-depth look at communicators in the mid-Atlantic. In this “Up Close and Personal” profile, we feature **Serrin Ransom.** Photography for the series is by [**Cade Martin**](http://cademartin.com/?ref=capitolcommunicator.com)**,** wardrobe styling by **Pascale Lemaire** and **Sybil Street** for THE Artist Agency; and hair and makeup by **Patti D Nelson, Janice Kinigopoulos** and **Lori Pressman** for THE Artist Agency.

**Serrin, please provide us a short bio.**

I have been working at GMMB since 2006 and am currently the Associate Design Director. I graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.F.A. in visual communications and minors in art history and history. I spent four years at Running Press Book Publishers in Philadelphia where I worked directly with illustrators and photographers and was responsible for the company catalog. After a stint in Thailand where I received a certificate to teach ESL, I returned to Boston where I taught with Berlitz International and returned to designing at Ace Designs in Cambridge, MA.

**What are the things you are most proud of?**

Personally, surviving an intense, week-long trek through the Andes that culminated at Machu Picchu. Professionally, creating new branding for the College of the Holy Cross and their athletic department.

**Who are your personal role models?**

My parents. They instilled a strong work ethic and the importance of being conscientious.

**Did your parents offer professional advice that helped you in your career?**

Be thoughtful, honest, direct and not afraid of failure.

**What professional advice do you have for others?**

Ask questions. Be curious about the world. Anticipate what the next ask will be and plan for it.

**What’s on your Spotify and Pandora playlists?**

Depending on the day and hour anything from the Beatles to Courtney Barnett to Pearl Jam to Roy Orbison.

**What’s your favorite restaurant?**

Right now La Piquette. It is a loud, bustling spot that feels like a Paris bistro where you are surrounded by retired journalists and professors recounting past exploits. Also the food is delicious and they have rosé on tap.

**Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?**

I feel very lucky to be in the creative world right now. It’s such an amazing time to be creating things – from protest posters to digital experiences. People are pushing what it means to be a designer, what *is* design, and that means each day there’s new things to learn, to see and to do.
