**The Washington Post editorial board** has joined a growing number of organizations that will stop using the word “Redskins” when writing about Washington’s football team; however, the Post’s news coverage will continue to call the team by its official name.

The Post editorial stated that that the paper would “continue to vigorously cover controversy over the team’s name and avoid any advocacy role on this subject.” Of note, the Post’s editorial board first stated its concern about the team’s name more than 20 years ago.

Team owner **Daniel Snyder** has stated repeatedly that he will never change the team’s name and that it honors Native Americans, despite the fact that some Native Americans consider the name to be a racial slur.

(The team is third on Forbes List of NFL’s Most Valuable Teams – behind the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots – and is valued at $2.4 billion. The Baltimore Ravens are tenth on the list and valued at $1.5 billion.)
