[**The Washington Post**](https://www.washingtonpost.com/?ref=capitolcommunicator.com) **lost more than $100 million in 2025,** according to people familiar with the matter, underscoring the mounting financial pressures facing the 148-year-old newspaper owned by Amazon founder **Jeff Bezos,** reports[ **Citybiz**](https://www.citybiz.co/article/811313/washington-posts-losses-top-100-million-in-2025-amid-deep-cuts/?abkw=citybizwashington&ref=capitolcommunicator.com)**.**

The latest shortfall, continues Citybiz, follows losses of roughly $100 million in 2024 and $77 million in 2023, “continuing a multiyear stretch in which expenses outpaced revenue. The deteriorating balance sheet prompted the company to eliminate about one-third of its workforce, shutter its sports section and scale back numerous foreign bureaus.

“At a staff meeting Wednesday, acting publisher and chief executive Jeff D’Onofrio and Executive Editor Matt Murray outlined the paper’s financial challenges and the need to raise productivity.

“D’Onofrio said operating costs exceeded revenue each year from 2022 through 2025, a period during which the Post expanded headcount by hiring hundreds of employees. Since 2020, the number of stories published has fallen 42%, he said, while newsroom expenses in 2025 were 16% higher than five years earlier.

“Murray told staff the newsroom would adopt a more selective editorial approach.”

“We don’t want or need to do every story or jump on everything that happens,” he said. “We’re not a paper of record; there’s no such thing anymore in today’s world.”
