**The Wikipedia Chaos Index sits at 64 for the month of Augus**t, up 3% from July’s index. Though this generally means Wikipedia is steady, there are still a number of interesting trends to observe in the granular data. There was a noticeable uptick in new pages created in August – though Articles for Creation submissions and draft declines are down slightly for the month, an uptick in COI posts suggests most of these new pages had some degree of uncertainty around their neutrality. Edits, deletions, and sock puppet investigations remain steady as they’ve done throughout Q3, which is a trend we typically see during this quarter.

The Wikipedia community communicates with each other in many different forms; some digital, some virtual – and, frequently, in real life, forging editorial connections not only across disciplines and subjects of interests, but across projects and nations, led by each year’s global Wikimania conference.

From August 7th to 10th, the 19th annual Wikimania took place in the city of Katowice, Poland. Often known as the place where the annual Wikimedia Awards are handed out (this year’s award went to Ukranian Wikipedia administrator Vira Motorko), Wikimania is an important conference uniting the global contributing community of Wikipedia. The theme (or “Spirit”) of Wikimania 2024 was Collaboration of the Open, which focused its attention on Wikipedia, not just as an open project, but how the collaborative could create open data, open government, and open research initiatives to connect Wikimedians worldwide, and “strengthen the impact of open knowledge”. From tours of hosting cities to live demonstrations of tools and editing roundtable discussions, Wikimania remains a tradition like no other for Wikipedia – and in 2025, is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary in Nairobi, Kenya.

*The Chaos Index is* [*The Mather Group*](https://themathergroupllc.com/?ref=capitolcommunicator.com)*‘s proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.*
