Award-winning photographer Cade Martin “fell in love” with the Hotel Chelsea in NYC

Award-winning photographer Cade Martin started staying at the Hotel Chelsea when in New York City for projects and “fell in love with the hotel and started making images morning and night – before and after work.”

The Hotel Chelsea (also known as the Chelsea Hotel and the Chelsea) is a hotel at 222 West 23rd Street in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Built between 1883 and 1884, the hotel was designed by Philip Hubert in a style described variously as Queen Anne Revival and Victorian Gothic.

According to D.C.-based Cade Martin, the hotel is a  “bohemian landmark in the middle of Manhattan that remains as star-studded as ever: From Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith to Dylan Thomas, Iggy Pop – the majestic red brick building—with its French Quarter style balustrades and legendary neon sign—has been home to a lengthy list of inspirational artists, renegades and creatives.

“Even in the most-seen city, there is adventure in chasing a what-might-be-around-the next-corner feeling. My favorite work is often something that catches me in the moment, scratching the itch of the unexpected in an obscure corner of an unknown town, or on the West Side of Manhattan.

“I wasn’t planning on it, but the Hotel Chelsea was spinning tales that I had to listen to.”
