“Best Crew” features Wardrobe / Prop Stylist Aimee Schlectman

Capitol Communicator is featuring “Best Crew,” a profile series by Eli Meir Kaplan, a Washington, D.C.-based commercial photographer and director. The “Best Crew” series features talent behind the scenes of photo, film and video productions. This profile features Wardrobe / Prop Stylist Aimee Schlectman.

How long have you been in the entertainment industry and how did you get started?

I have been doing wardrobe / props styling for 20 years. I studied Fashion Design in college and then worked a few years in the fashion industry and then corporation America. BORING! So, I went back and took classes at FIT, then interned on an Indie feature in NYC, where I got my first taste of set/movie life and I was hooked!

Who are some of your clients and why do they love working with you?

My clients love working with me because I am flexible, good at problem solving, prideful of my work and put 100 % of myself into every shoot. I take it very personally! Specifically, Eli Meir Kaplan, Cold Harbor Film, IMG, Rocket Media  and Long Story Short.

What is your most invaluable tool?

I am quick on my feet, resilient and creative.

What gear/kit purchase have you made that you wish you didn’t?

Recently I bought a smaller steamer.  I own the Jiffy Professional Steamer which weighs about 25 pounds. I’m very happy to have a new lighter replacement!

Who has inspired and helped you along the way?

I have some very seasoned industry friends. I am not shy to ask for advice and run ideas by them. It’s always good to have a sounding board of people who understand this challenging industry and can offer sound advice.

What do you love about the work you do?

I love that each job is completely different, collaborating with creative minds and making beautiful images.

What was a favorite production you’ve worked on and what made it special?

My favorite production was Puppy Bowl 2020.  Not only did I work on the set I designed cheerleading outfits for the dogs. All dog contestants came from shelters or rescue groups and were adopted.  Animal welfare is a big cause of mine. I was so elated to be a part of such an amazing event.

What advice would you give to others who are starting out in your field?

Expect to work hard.  This is not a glamorous industry!  There is a lot of physical work.  Make connections, follow up with people, be on time, do a great job and always be nice to the PA’s.

What are your top-five favorite movies?

Valley Girl
Goodfellas
ELF
Casino
Fatal Attraction
