Communicators Meet with Baltimore Sun Editors; Daley Exits Maroon for Whirlaway; Kapowza News

by | Nov 13, 2018

Communicators gathered at the Spark Baltimore offices on Nov. 13 to hear the latest from The Baltimore Sun’s editors, including staffing and assignment changes and the best ways to communicate with the news organization. Email works best, take “no” for an answer, target the right editor or reporter, and other tried and true tips were shared. The editors also provided detailed pitching guidance and answered questions about specific approaches for getting news covered. The annual event, organized by the Baltimore Public Relations Council, featured the following Sun staffers: Trif Alatzas, publisher and editor in chief (pictured, left); Sam Davis, managing editor; Amanda Kell, politics; Anne Tallent, director of content/news; Andrew Green, opinion editor; Chris Dinsmore, business and health editor; Rachel Cieri Mull, features and magazines editor; Jim Joyner, suburban and community news; and Ellen Fishel, breaking news editor. This year’s session was moderated by Gayle V. Economos of GVE Media/Public Relations.

After more than 12 years at Maroon PR, Chris Daley has made the move to start his own company, Whirlaway LLC. According to the new website, “Whirlaway LLC is a communications agency providing public relations and marketing services that charge brands forward. Established by 15-year industry professional, Chris Daley, the agency offers companies and individuals customized services that align with their marketing budgets and optimizes their reach to desired audiences.” Maroon founder and CEO John Maroon told PR Week he has no plans to replace Daley and will spread his duties to other staffers “We’re going to share his responsibilities for business development and branding of the company among other employees and use some business consulting and outside help,” said Maroon.

Kapowza unveiled two new commercials for the Long & Foster team of Creig Northrop, now Northrop Realty, the #1 Realtor Nationally through Long & Foster and in Maryland.  The two spots began running with the new NFL season as well as the debut of the latest “This Is Us” season.
