After six years at the helm, Dr. Ronald A. Crutcher stepped down as the 10th president of the University of Richmond. A feature story in the university’s magazine states that Dr. Crutcher leaves “a legacy of academic excellence, reputation-building, and institutional self-examination.”

The story also says that the imprint of Dr. Crutcher’s leadership “shows what a fruitful match he and the university made when the board of trustees entrusted him with the presidency in 2015. Under his leadership, the university has strengthened the infrastructure that promotes learning, increased its reach and reputation, and stepped closer to becoming a thriving and inclusive community for every student”

Photos of Dr. Crutcher for the story were by award-winning photographer Cade Martin. He told Capitol Communicator that Dr. Crutcher was “beloved and revered.

“Sometimes when someone completes their service as president we’re prone to hyperbole. But in the case of Dr. Ronald A. Crutcher, it’s clear those words ring true. His transformative administration will reverberate far beyond his 6-year tenure.

“As a Richmond kid, I always enjoy projects that highlight the best of us. It was an honor to photograph President Crutcher and bask in the obvious respect and admiration of a University and community.”

Dr. Crutcher is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Miami University in Ohio, and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at Yale University. He is a former member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and several other symphonies, and is on the board of the Richmond Symphony. He has performed in the U.S. and Europe as a member of The Klemperer Trio.

About the Author

Cade Martin

The only child of a university art professor and freethinker mother, Cade Martin grew up surrounded by shapes and images. His love of art grew out of summer vacations filled with trips to galleries, museums and art studios. At home he often found himself around the dinner table with an eclectic cast of characters – sculptors, writers and painters. They paraded through his childhood, shaping his art foundation and forming his appreciation for the candid beauty found in people from all walks of life. Cade’s been chasing characters ever since. He seeks out their stories-told through the architecture of their faces or the costumes they wear-whether he’s on a commercial production or setting up an Avedon-like photo booth at Comic Con. They are the heroes in his pictures. His thirst for capturing adventures took its hold while shooting stills on movie sets and then as a photographer for National Geographic covering the railways of India. And it is that sense of adventure that Cade brings to his productions elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary with a cinematic touch. It’s not just a picture. He’s committed to the experience, building beautiful environments and, sometimes for his portraits, simply building trust. A talented storyteller, Cade splits his time between the East and West Coasts creating images for editorial, advertising, fashion, and lifestyle clients
