Dr. Unique Morris-Hughes, Director of the Department of Employment Services in Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Administration, will kick off Freelance Business Week DC on Monday, April 18, 2022.
In her role as State Labor Commissioner, Dr. Morris-Hughes is directly responsible for more than $150M in local, federal and specific-purpose funds administered by the District of Columbia and the federal government for workforce development programs and training, unemployment compensation, universal paid leave administration and labor standards enforcement along with more than $80M in active capital projects.
Following a welcome and remarks by Dr. Morris-Hughes, a panel of local experts will discuss the state of freelancing and independent work, the different pathways to getting there and what the future of work will look like. Speakers will include:

- Stacey Price, Co-Founder, Shop Made in DC
- Mclean Robbins, Vice President, Enterprise Marketing, MBO Partners
- Connie Steele, Author of “Building the Business of You” and Future of Work and Life expert
The panel will be moderated by Dr. Tony D. Johnson, President and CEO at Captivate Perspectives.
The panel will be followed by lunch and an open house with free co-working space and professional headshots.
More than 100 professionals are already scheduled to attend over the course of the week which, in addition to the kickoff, features 2 additional sessions programmed for Freelance Professionals and Independent Consultants.
