Gen Z attorney turned TikTok and Substack content creator with 2 million followers signals shift in news landscape

The future of news gathering and distribution continues to evolve, with independent content creators and aggregators leading the charge. This was evident during a recent webinar, “TikTok and the Future of Digital,” hosted by National Digital Roundtable and Social Driver, featuring Aaron Parnas, a 25-year-old attorney who has transformed into one of social media’s rising news voices.

Parnas, who launched his journalism career in 2022, has amassed 1.6 million TikTok followers by sharing news content that resonates with younger audiences increasingly disconnected from the traditional media landscape. His approach represents a significant departure from conventional journalism, one Parnas says is needed because “there aren’t enough young people online sharing news.”

Operating as a one-person newsroom, Parnas said he relies on content repurposing tools like repurpose.io to maintain a presence across platforms, cross-posting content to Instagram, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and his Substack newsletter, “The Parnas Perspective.” His reach extends to X and Bluesky as well. With the TikTo ban issue still unresolved, Parnas emphasizes the importance of diversifying across multiple platforms and formatting content length based on audience and platform requirements.

His solo operation allows for quick, nimble sharing of news reports without the layers of approval that can slow corporations and traditional media organizations. It also increases the risk of sharing inaccurate information. To maintain this high-output operation, Parnas says he doesn’t read the comments section on his posts and maintains careful attention to work-life balance. He told the webinar audience that sleep is a high priority.

Asked by Capitol Communicator regional editor Jeffrey Davis about views on the disconnect with traditional journalism’s practice of objectivity, Parnas said he has no problem inserting personal perspective: “I’m trying to be as objective as possible but while I try to stick to the facts, it’s not always possible to only stick to the facts,” Parnas noted, challenging traditional journalism’s stance on neutrality. This approach appears to resonate with his Generation Z audience, which he believes is “disenchanted” with the traditional media landscape and isn’t as offended by editorializing as part of news delivery.

In an introduction on Substack posted this week, he had this to say: “Since November 5th, I have gained more than two million new followers across my social media platforms, with the most on TikTok. I don’t write that to brag. I write that because Americans are waking up to a new landscape following this election. Legacy media is no longer dying. It’s dead. And, it died on November 5th.

“For years, legacy media channels, whether online, on TV, or in print, have told the American public that Donald Trump is a danger to our way of living,” Parnas wrote. “Then, the moment he won, everything changed. He was no longer a danger to our democracy to the legacy media. It was almost like a switch went off and legacy media was afraid that Trump would harm their bottom line. It’s true. And, it’s exactly why I have grown so much since the election.

“So, no matter what, my pledge to you is simple: I won’t be bought out by a billionaire who will control my platform. I will always share the truth. And, you will never catch me groveling at the feet of Donald Trump in Mar A Lago.”

What is the role for communicators in this new environment? With independent “journalists” like Parnas aggregating and repackaging content from in-the-trenches news-gatherers, PR professionals need to stay the course: continue to reach out to trusted news outlets and remain active on social media as that’s where it will get picked up by the aggregators. Yes, it’s back to the basics, just a different path to reaching those 1.6 million followers.
