Washington Capitals radio play-by-play announcer John Walton has been diagnosed with colon cancer.
In a post to social media, Walton shared that he underwent a colonoscopy late last month and assumed the results would be ordinary. However, he was diagnosed with the ailment after doctors took a closer look, reports Barrett Media.
He shared that he would undergo surgery on Wednesday “to remove between 8-10 inches of my colon and the mass that is formed there. I’ll be in the hospital for a few days to recover, and home after to continue my recovery.”
Walton added that if the surgery and his recovery go well, he plans to attend Washington Capitals training camp as normal with the hope of being “in the broadcast booth for the first preseason game” on Sunday, September 22nd.
Walton has been the radio voice of the Capitals since 2011.
(The Cleveland Browns’ radio announcer of more than two decades, Jim Donovan, says he’s done in the broadcast booth as he focuses on his health. In March, it was revealed that Donovan had completed his radiation treatments and “moved on to a different phase of treatment” in his battle with leukemia.)
