Longtime D.C.-area sportscaster Chick Hernandez “no longer an employee of WUSA9″

Longtime D.C.-area sportscaster Chick Hernandez is “no longer an employee of WUSA9,” Richard Dyer, the president and general manager of the CBS affiliate, said in an email to The Washington Post.

According to The Post: The face of the station’s Commanders coverage, Hernandez traveled to Madrid to cover the team’s November 16 game against the Miami Dolphins.  After providing daily reports from practices, news conferences and a youth football clinic hosted by the Commanders throughout the week, Hernandez was not in the press box for the game. The station did not air a report from Hernandez about Washington’s 16-13 overtime loss.

“[T]here was a late change to our coverage plans in Madrid” and Hernandez  “is no longer an employee of WUSA9,” Dyer wrote in an email.  Dyer did not respond to a Post request to comment further about how the announcement of Hernandez’s termination was made or the reasons behind the decision. Hernandez declined to comment.

Hernandez was hired by WUSA9 as a sports anchor in August 2023 and had worked at the network formerly known as NBC Sports Washington from 2001 until his contract was not renewed in 2018. Hernandez got his start in D.C. as a reporter and anchor with WTTG in 1994, when the station’s sports director, Steve Buckhantz, hired him to replace Gus Johnson.

Carlos “Chick” Hernandez is a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School and was a three-sport athlete his Senior year (football, baseball, and swimming). He started his radio career while at the University of Maryland. After working his way up at TV stations in smaller markets, he returned to the D.C. area to become a fixture on networks such as  Fox News, Comcast and NBC.

In addition to his recognition for his broadcasting and reporting, he is a recipient of the Distinguished Terrapin Award presented by the Shirley  Povich Center at the University of  Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

According to LinkedIn, Hernandez now is a “Freelancer for hire. TV, Radio, Voice Over.”
