Matt Goddard, visionary digital marketing CEO and co-founder of R2i, dies at 53

by | Nov 26, 2023

Matt Goddard, a pioneering leader in the digital marketing industry and former CEO and founder of Baltimore’s R2i, has died at age 53.

Goddard co-founded R2integrated (later known as R2i) in 2005 with Chris Chodnicki and Dave Taub. Under Goddard’s and his partners’ leadership, the company grew and attracted top-tier national clients before being acquired by Baird Capital in 2016.

Capitol Communicator reported that in 2022 global consulting firm Protiviti acquired R2i to grow its digital transformation and customer experience offering to clients.

“Matt’s role as CEO was more than strategic; it was visionary,” business partner and R2i co-founder Chodnicki wrote on LinkedIn. “His ability to navigate challenges, anticipate future trends, and embrace change positioned R2i as a regional and eventually national force. Baltimore held a special place in Matt’s heart, evident in his commitment to the tech startup community and our company’s growth milestones.

“Even in the face of a year-long battle with glioblastoma, Matt’s resilience, positivity, and strength never wavered. His journey inspired hope and comfort, showcasing a spirit characterized by intelligence, generosity, stoicism, and unwavering stubbornness.

“Matt’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy and the memories we shared endure. Rest in peace, partner and dearest friend. Your impact on my life and the lives of many is immeasurable,” Chodnicki shared.

Prior to R2i, Goddard co-founded Impreza, another digital marketing agency based in Baltimore. After Impreza’s acquisition by Sinclair Broadcast Group, Goddard started Round 2 Communications which evolved into R2integrated.

In addition to his pioneering work in digital marketing, Goddard oversaw R2i Ventures, making equity investments in innovative startups. He was also actively involved in Baltimore’s startup community.

Originally from Gaithersburg and a graduate of Towson University and the Carey Business School of The Johns Hopkins University, he also oversaw R2i ventures, a division of r2i that made equity investments in start-up companies launching unique and innovative technologies.

R2i was a founding digital partner of Capitol Communicator under the direction of Goddard.
