New Muck Rack Report: 1 in 3 journalists now publish independently

Muck Rack released its first State of Creator Journalism, a focused analysis from our annual State of Journalism survey.
The key takeaway: Independent journalism is a lasting and influential part of the media landscape, and PR pros need to take note. Some key findings include:
- Half of these journalists have been publishing independently for over five years
- Creators use an average of 2.5 formats, most often personal websites, blogs, and newsletters
- 32% see PR professionals as essential partners, and 29% regularly respond to pitches, higher rates than their newsroom peers
- 82% say some of their stories start with PR pitches, yet most find them irrelevant, showing room for better outreach
- Creator journalists prefer pitches that are fewer than 200 words. However, they have a higher tolerance for follow-ups, with 82% reporting it should come within the first week.
