Reuters, one of the largest global news organizations, will launch digital subscriptions for its website and mobile app in October, joining a growing list of news websites using paywalls. The subscription plan will be available to users at a price of $1 a week.
According to a post, 173 years ago, Reuters was founded on the principle that people needed a trusted source to stay informed about is happening around the world. This need has never been stronger as misinformation, slanted viewpoints and unreliable news sources are on the rise, making it harder to know what’s real and who to trust.
“Reuters is on the front lines of conflicts, navigating the halls of government, and reporting from inside corporate boardrooms around the world. That is why the world’s news outlets, financial institutions, companies, governments and consumers rely on us to deliver the truth. We take that responsibility very seriously,” said Reuters President Paul Bascobert. “Trusted, unbiased, agenda-free news is essential in an era rife with misinformation. This new subscription plan ensures Reuters can expand the reach of its award-winning coverage at an affordable price, while allowing us to further invest in our reporting and products for subscribers.”
Reuters website and app users will be able to access a limited number of articles per month before receiving an offer to subscribe. Digital subscriptions will be available first in Canada, followed by multiple countries in Europe and the United States with plans to expand globally.
In related news CNN, one of the most popular news websites in the world, is starting to ask some of its visitors to pay $3.99 a month for access.
