D.C. radio update: What’s new at WMMJ and WTOP

Russ Parr’s near-35-year on-air career is about to get longer, with the announcement of his return to Urban One urban AC “Majic 102.3” WMMJ Washington, DC as PM drive host starting April 27, reports Inside Radio.

From 1996 to 2023, Parr, above, hosted the “Russ Parr Morning Show,” which, states Inside Radio, was “nationally syndicated by Urban One’s Reach Media from 2006 until Parr ended the program in 2023. After stints at KDAY Los Angeles and KJMZ Dallas, Parr moved to DC, where he first hosted mornings at Urban One’s urban contemporary WKYS (93.9) until moving to “Majic” in 2015.

“Parr’s new afternoon show will include several members of his earlier morning team, including co-host and executive producer Tanisha Nichole along with DJ Sixth Sense’s weekday mix, Georgia Alfredas’ “Daily Horrorscope” and recurring show characters such as “Sweet Peter Jeter” and “The Cliché King.”

““It’s an honor to have another opportunity to serve the people of the DMV by coming back to Majic,” Parr says. “I’m looking forward to re-engaging my 37 listeners.”

“Over the years, Parr’s career has gone beyond just radio, having also worked as a stand-up comedian, actor, filmmaker, recording artist and currently as host of the “Russ ParrCast” podcast.”

WTOP Washington, DC (103.5) is promoting Rob Woodfork, above, to Senior Sports Analyst, a move that signals a broader shift in how the all-news outlet approaches sports coverage as it leans into analysis, storytelling and digital-first content, reports Inside Radio.

The promotion, states Inside Radio, “is tied to a three-year strategy focused on going “beyond the scores,” with an emphasis on delivering context-rich reporting across audio, video, and written platforms. The station says the goal is to better align with evolving audience expectations, particularly among Gen X and Millennial consumers seeking more insight-driven coverage.”

“We are excited to announce Rob’s promotion,” Director of News and Programming Julia Ziegler said, calling the move a key component of WTOP’s long-term transformation. “We’re committed to delivering content that goes beyond highlights and final scores—focusing instead on context, analysis, and storytelling that resonates with today’s audience.”
