State of Wikipedia report for July 2025

The Chaos Index sits at 62 for the month of July, down ever-so-slightly (2 points) from June.

After peaking this spring at over 3,000 articles, the number of unreviewed draft pages on Wikipedia sits under 500 for the first time in 2025. This has led to a drastic decrease in Articles for Creation approval wait times, to the shortest they’ve been since early 2024.

The number of new pages created and pages declined both increased this month, showing that while Wikipedia is catching up on its backlog of unreviewed drafts, new page patrollers remain incredibly busy with the high rate of new submissions.

With the increased prevalence of AI across the internet, Wikipedia’s influence on information (and its accuracy) only grows more important with each passing day. However, the editor community’s relationship with the technology remains incredibly precarious – which came to a head recently, when the Wikimedia Foundation attempted to experiment with machine-generated summaries at the top of each article.

The editorial response was swift; the pilot program was ended one day after it began, kicking off a widespread discussion about the implementation and goals of the project, with many editors soundly rejecting the attempt as a way to “one-up” Google’s Gemini results (detailed in a 404 Media article about the editorial backlash).

Though Wikipedia’s future with AI remains unclear, one thing is certain: the editorial community remains highly skeptical about any implementation of machine learning technology anywhere on the platform, a reminder of how powerful the volunteer editing community remains on Wikipedia in 2025 – and how important original content remains to the core of its mission to be the largest hub of objective information on the internet.

NOTE: The Chaos Index is our proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.
