State of Wikipedia report for June 2025

The Wikipedia Chaos Index stands at 64, down about 9% for the month of June. There was a noticeable increase in declined drafts this week, an expected increase with Articles for Creation submissions remaining extremely high month to month.Overall editing on Wikipedia decreased slightly in June, but administrative activities remain incredibly active, with SPI investigations and page deletion nominations remaining at the high levels they were throughout the spring.

In 2026, Wikipedia will celebrate its 25th anniversary, a huge milestone for one of the internet’s most resilient, fundamental websites – it will also mark the beginning of a new era for the Foundation, when Maryana Iskander steps down as CEO of the foundation, after nearly four years in the position.

During her tenure at Wikipedia, Iskander has expanded Wikipedia’s data centers and worked to develop new funding sources for the platform; she was also CEO during the site’s big visual transformation in 2023, and has worked to develop technologies and programs around the many technology companies making extensive use of Wikipedia’s incredible sets of data.

With a global search for a new CEO underway, Wikipedia finds itself looking for new leadership in a critical time for the platform, where the proliferation of AI has affected web traffic worldwide, and the polarization of media has made Wikipedia’s presence and policies all the more important, especially with ongoing developments like the Indian court case, or threats to remove the foundation’s non-profit status or unmask some of its users from the American government and the Heritage Foundation. The outcomes of these critical events will shape the platform, and its direction, for years to come, further reinforcing the heightened sense of importance around the search for the Wikimedia Foundation’s next chief executive officer.

NOTE: The Chaos Index is our proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.
