State of Wikipedia report for March 2026

In March 2026, the Wikipedia Chaos Index sits at 92 which is considered critical levels of chaos. This means that we recommend extreme caution and waiting until activity drops again for publishing new drafts, controversial information or engaging directly with editors.

Deletion nominations and successful deletions saw an increase in March; more presciently, the percentage of pages nominated and subsequently deleted rose from 72% in January to nearly 88% in February, as editors become more restrictive with Wikipedia editing policies.

As a result of increased activity across the platform, both contributor and editorial, there has been a noticeable increase in sockpuppet and conflict of interest investigations.  As artificial intelligence continues to proliferate across all industries, this has caused a natural rise of interest in the topic, and a lot of related content coming to Wikipedia. The Wikipedia volunteer community is definitely taking notice; as more and more content about artificial intelligence has made its way to the platform, experienced editors and administrators are taking hard lines on content related to AI technology, especially on company pages.

This has led to large deletions and reversions of content related to AI products; among this, is a noticeable trend where editors are cracking down on citations, especially tech journals and websites that are not included on Wikipedia’s Perennial Sources list. Strong citations are always a bedrock to building a Wikipedia page that will experience long-term success; with editors becoming even more restrictive and adhering to the very letter of its policies, ensuring quality coverage from trusted third-party publications is more important than ever.

Note: The Chaos Index is our proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environment
