State of Wikipedia report for September 2024

by | Sep 11, 2024

The Chaos Index rose 5% for the month of September with a score of 67. This is typical for fall and winter months on Wikipedia, as more people are naturally online and engaging with the platform.

This is reflected in the editing pace across the platform, which increased drastically to the high levels we typically see from September until April/May each year.

There was a slight decline in AfC submissions and wait times in August, which suggests the backlog from earlier in 2024 is catching up with the pace of new submissions to review.

At the top of every Wikipedia page, there are two links that appear in the top left corner: “Article” and “Talk”. While everyone can grasp the concept of the Article page, the true power of a Wikipedia page is often held within the contents of its Talk page, the place where Wikipedians go to discuss page issues – and more importantly, one of the very few Wikipedia tools available to companies and individuals looking to rectify issues with their own Wikipedia pages.

Talk pages are incredibly important to understand, whether just a regular Wikipedia editor learning the ropes, a long-time admin looking to resolve issues with a page, or someone tasked with improving outdated content on a company’s page. To do so requires a bit of knowledge about Wikipedia procedures, conflict of interest policies, and how to effectively interact with high-level Wikipedia editors – all of which we’ll be covering on a September 18th LinkedIn live event: Wikipedia – How to Utilize the Talk Page and Get Things Done.

Want to learn more about how to effectively utilize Wikipedia as a tool? You can sign up for the event, which airs on September 18th at 1pm EST, at this link.

The Chaos Index is The Mather Group‘s proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.
