Sylvia Bugg, PBS’ Chief Programming Executive, dies at 55

Sylvia Bugg, PBS’ Chief Programming Executive and General Manager for General Audience Programming, who had a long career in public broadcasting and at Discovery Communications, has died. She was 55, reports Deadline.

PBS CEO Paula Kerger said Bugg died “unexpectedly this weekend” but did not provide a cause of death of other details.

“Over decades in public media, including her leadership at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and three chapters of service here at PBS, Sylvia shaped the programming that defines our service to the American people,” Kerger said in a statement. “She brought forward landmark films across history, science, and the arts, and guided our America @ 250 slate through a defining year.”

Kerger’s statement stated that Bugg had worked at PBS prior during the 1990s and later for Discovery Communications before moving in 2014 to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, where she was VP Diversity and Television Contact. She rejoined PBS in early 2020, overseeing editorial team and leading strategy across all genres, including news, public affairs, documentaries, history, science, natural history and arts programs.

She was promoted to her most recent PBS post  during the Covid lockdown nine months later, replacing Perry Simon. Reporting to Kerger, Bugg led PBS’ multiplatform efforts in response to the global pandemic, including a revamp of the pubcaster’s daytime and primetime schedules to prioritize educational and cultural programs.

According to a 2020 PBS release, Bugg had an MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, an MA in Journalism from American University and a BA in Communications from Old Dominion University. She was a member of the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications and Women In Film and Video.

PBS is based in Arlington, VA.
