Donnie Simpson, veteran D.C. radio personality, exits WMMJ/WDCJ

Veteran D.C.radio personality Donnie Simpson has hosted his final afternoon show on Radio One urban AC “Majic 102.3/92.7” WMMJ/WDCJ. Simpson revealed the end of the show on January 10 with co-host Tony Perkins following up the announcement with a post on Facebook.

Simpson, a 55-year veteran of the industry, returned to the DC airwaves in August 2015, ending a five-year retirement. Simpson left CBS Radio’s rhythmic CHR WPGC (95.5) in January 2010, reportedly over clashes with management about how to make his morning show more conducive to PPM ratings measurement, reports Inside Radio. Simpson had been at WPGC from 1993-2010. He was heard on a string of urban stations in Washington starting in 1977. He also had a national profile as host of BET’s “Video Soul” from 1983-1986.

“After a historic and spectacular 55-year career in radio and television, Radio Hall of Fame legend Donnie Simpson announced that he is stepping away from local radio, Majic 102.3/92.7 in Washington, DC,” the station said in a statement.

Perkins joined Simpson at “Majic 102.3” in January 2018. He was Simpson’s producer and co-host on urban contemporary WKYS (93.9) from 1985-1992 and has since gone on to a successful TV career that included serving as weatherman for “Good Morning America” for nearly seven years and news anchor on Fox 5 in DC.
