What Winning a Gold Quill Award Can Do

by | Jan 23, 2017

For more than 40 years, IABC’s Gold Quill Awards have recognized and awarded excellence in strategic communication worldwide. Gold Quill is the only awards program that honors the dedication, innovation and passion of communicators on a global scale.

The IABC Gold Quill Awards are presented annually at the Excellence Awards Gala at the IABC World Conference. In 2017, IABC’s World Conference comes to Washington, D.C., and the Washington Hilton, June 11–14. This year’s Excellence Awards Gala will take place on the evening of June 13.

What kind of impact does winning a Gold Quill Award have? We asked Michael Metzger to talk about the effect that winning has had on him, personally and professionally. Michael won an Award of Excellence at the 2015 IABC Gold Quill Awards, and his firm Metzger Communications was named one of three finalists for the Boutique Agency of the Year.

What did it feel like when you found out you had won?
It was a thrill, of course, tempered by a sense of relief. Entering client work in an awards program means sticking your neck out somewhat. If it turns out not to measure up, the obvious question is, why not? The point here is that entrants tend to self-select, so the overall standard of entries is high. That makes winning an award all the more meaningful.

What made your submission special?
The project was an annual report to members of a retirement savings plan. We used digital printing technology to create a highly personalized and targeted report specific to each member. In doing so, we transformed the annual report from being a compliance exercise to being an engaging channel to educate members about planning for their income in retirement.

What impact has the award had on your business?
I don’t think awards bring work in the door, but they add to your credibility. I think the biggest impact has been on my own confidence. It’s a tacit acknowledgment that the quality of advice you give your clients stacks up against the best in the world.

Why are awards such as these important to those working in communication?
It’s an opportunity to benchmark your work against the best in the world. The independent peer review aspect is particularly valuable. The IABC judges’ comments are often insightful and always constructive.
