Wikipedia Chaos Index moves slightly down in October

In October, the Wikipedia Chaos Index moved very slightly down to 87, keeping it at the same High range it has been throughout 2026. The platform remains highly volatile, so our advice remains unchanged: publishing new drafts, updating controversial content, or engaging in debates with editors is not recommended until activity slows down again.

Wikipedia’s overall editing levels decreased slightly in the month of October, though the platform still remains at the incredibly high levels of activity we saw earlier in the year.

Articles for Deletion nominations and successful deletions both saw a significant increase in the month of October, including a 27% increase in nominations. This, alongside a decrease in page submissions, led to the smallest amount of net new pages added to the platform all year; editorial scrutiny remains incredibly high, and expansion of the platform continues to slow because of this.

Wikimedia Foundation published an article discussing the recent news about clusters of “rogue” OpenAI agents trying to utilize the internet to secretly communicate and coordinate with each other outside the boundaries of the presumed security structures placed on their testing environments. In the article, the Foundation revealed that it conducted its own investigation, and discovered activity by OpenAI’s rogue agents on Wikimedia’s platforms.

Though Wikimedia says they didn’t find any evidence of AI agents using public wikis and related platforms for coordination or to compromise data, but that the agents did try to do a number of malicious actions, including manipulating citation tools and sandbox environments to try and use Wikipedia as a proxy fetching service. This led to more than 50 unauthorized edits, unsuccessful attempts to compromise Etherpad (Wikipedia’s note-taking tool), and excessive data downloading, which may have been responsible for the Wikidata Query Service crash in May.

With a 65% increase in resource-consuming traffic from bots and rogue agents trying to affect the platform, Wikipedia has been incredibly responsive in responding to the unpredictable growth and behavior of AI agents. However, this has also led to a much stricter editorial standard being placed on anything related to artificial intelligence – and continues to strain the relationship between the foundation and the major AI companies as they try to strike a balance between accessibility and security.

NOTE: The Chaos Index is our proprietary metric for measuring turbulence throughout Wikipedia and tracking the community’s current sentiment towards corporate-related pages. The index measures community actions such as editing frequency, content deletion, message board posts, and many other activities that contribute to unstable corporate page environments.
