Channel 4 News alumni gathered this weekend to catch up, share memories and celebrate the 40th anniversary of the George Michael Sports Machine.

Scott Clark, above, former sportscaster at WRC-TV from 1981 to 1986, organized the gathering and said he hadn’t seen many of the people for decades, and “for this one special moment, we were all together again, sharing the past as well as the present. The smiles, the laughter, the tears, and the hugs will be with us for the rest of our days.“

According to an attendee: “It takes a team of anchors, reporters, producers, photographers, editors, engineers and lots of dedicated people who get a show on the air – and the camaraderie came through during the two-day event, topped off with a party in Chevy Chase on Saturday night.”

Some are still active in broadcasting, such as Darcy Spencer, Channel 4; Catherine Snyder, MSNBC, Theresa Werner, NPR; Mark C. White, CBS; and Lou Charlip, who helped organize the event.

Others attending included Anchor Barbara Harrison, (right in photo above) who now runs a media company; and Debra Silimeo, (left in photo above) now in public relations. Several have moved into video production, media training – reporters Kelly Burke, Jack Cloherty and producer Dan Cohen – and related pursuits, and lots said they were enjoying the freedom of retirement.

Attendees said they were looking forward to a tour of the revamped WRC -TV studio on Nebraska Avenue NW and getting together again next year.

Michael died at age 70 on December 24, 2009, after being diagnosed with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia two years prior.
