A “harsh reality” going into 2026 and beyond

Days after Omnicom closed its acquisition of Interpublic Group, reports ADWEEK,  “U.S. employees returned from Thanksgiving break to a harsh reality: thousands of layoffs, dissolved agencies, and a new benefits package that workers describe as “the worst [they’ve] ever had.”

“Employee handbooks and benefits documents obtained by ADWEEK show the new Omnicom’s policies are a significant downgrade from IPG’s legacy package in the U.S.

“Those coming from IPG will lose a number of paid vacation days while trading in for reduced parental leave and holiday time, new severance limits, health plans that can result in higher costs, and a return-to-office requirement that affects raises and severance eligibility.”

Unfortunately, this “harsh reality” may become a growing reality as more and more companies and agencies are acquired.

Acquisitions, states an online item, can significantly impact employees through uncertainty, stress, culture clashes, and potential job losses in redundant roles (like middle management, marketing), but also bring new opportunities, growth, training, and potential for better benefits or larger company resources, with outcomes heavily depending on communication and integration quality. Employees often face job insecurity, new bosses, different systems, and altered benefits, leading to anxiety, while some might find career advancement in the larger entity.

The online item adds the following about the common challenges following an acquisition:

  • Cultural Clash: Differences in work styles, decision-making, and core values between the two companies create friction, stress, and confusion.
  • Loss of Identity: Employees feel their unique company’s values, traditions, and sense of belonging disappear, leading to low morale.
  • Uncertainty & Fear: Employees worry about job security, changing roles, and what the new company stands for, creating confusion about priorities and standards.
  • Communication Gaps: Lack of clear, consistent communication from leadership exacerbates anxiety and mistrust.

The reality is that there will be a significant number of acquisitions in coming years, with employees impacted by changes in corporate culture and corporate policies; plus the impact of senior-level changes related to the culture of organizations.

The bottom line is that while the spotlight is on money in business-related changes, the reality is that the employees also will pay the price – financially and emotionally.
