Buzz in Baltimore: News from Whirlaway, Legg Mason, GKV, Visit Baltimore, Abel and Harrison Communications

by | Apr 17, 2019

David Harrison of Harrison Communications and Greg Abel of Abel Communications helped get the Wayland Baptist University’s Flying Queens, the Texas school’s famed women’s basketball program, enshrinement in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Queens were instrumental in changes made to the game of women’s basketball. “Our firms’ objective was to increase the visibility of this ground-breaking program and help it win the recognition it deserves,” Harrison said.

Whirlaway, the new communications agency led by Chris Haley, is working with the Fair Hill Foundation, Maryland’s partner in a public private partnership aiming to revitalize facilities at Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area in Cecil County as it prepares to host a five-star equestrian event in 2020 and beyond.

GKV announced the promotion of Marni Rogow to vice president, supervisor of account management, responsible for the creative development and execution of broadcast, print and interactive materials for GKV clients including the Maryland Lottery and Rosedale Federal Savings & Loan Association. Rogow joined GKV in 2012 and previously worked at TracyLocke. GKV also announced the promotion of Emma Abbott to Vice President, Supervisor of Public Relations and Social Media, according to Stacey Wynia, SVP, Director of Public Relations and Social Media. Abbott joined GKV in 2014 and has more than 10 years of experience in social media, marketing and PR in a variety of industries, including health and wellness, travel/hospitality, and food and beverage. Prior to joining GKV, she was the PR/social media manager at Delaware North Companies.

Legg Mason has ended long-standing sports sponsorships with the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens, and the signage previously seen at Oriole Park at Camden Yards and at M&T Bank Stadium is gone. Leases for skyboxes at both venues were not renewed as Legg looks to redirect its marketing spend toward areas more relevant to their clients, according to a report in The Sun.

Visit Baltimore, the official destination sales and marketing organization for Baltimore, announced that Social Media Manager Erica Malanga has been named one of Destinations International’s 30 Under 30 recipients. Malanga is responsible for developing Visit Baltimore’s social media campaigns and content, as well as other digital initiatives. Malanga’s most recent efforts focus on promoting Baltimore’s burgeoning maker scene.
