Perhaps because it was so unexpected I have been deeply moved by being inducted into PRSA-NCC’s PR Hall of Fame this year. Perhaps it also feels so special to be thought of and appreciated by colleagues because we’ve been separated so long by the Pandemic.
I never thought I would be honored in this way, and my career path has been untraditional, beginning with publications, then PR and finally spending the past 26+ years creating and running the DC area’s only public relations temporary agency.
I suspect my involvement in many professional society projects and events and my volunteerism have been instrumental. These groups have encouraged me to take bold steps and to take on big challenges. What I learned made me a better communicator and a better businesswoman.
So my words of wisdom from this deeply appreciated moment are as follows:
- Be open to terrifying challenges. You can have no idea what you are capable of until tested by pressure.
- Surround yourself with smart, enthusiastic people and support their ideas. They can provide insights from which you’ll build your own success.
- Embrace the improvements others make to your plans and what you’ve created, watch them grow and be proud you planted the seed.
