Local TV News Audience Now Younger, More Diverse and More Informed

by | Nov 3, 2020

The Nielsen Local Watch Report found that the local news audience has become younger, more diverse and more informed. Here are some stats that might surprise you:

  • Local TV news has 74% more viewers than cable news and 29% more than network news among those aged 25-54
  • 64% of those working from home watch local news on a weekly basis
  • Black, Hispanic and Asian-American news viewers are the fastest-growing group
  • 18-34-year-olds increased TV news consumption 134% during the past year

Finally, given the increased audience, what types of satellite tour subjects are TV producers looking to cover? The list below has that info along with the percentages of TV producers most or very interested in covering that topic:

  • Health & Wellness (90%)
  • Consumer Goods (79%)
  • Holiday Gifts (78%)
  • Arts & Culture (75%)
  • Education (72%)
  • Navigating the Pandemic (70%)
  • Fashion (69%)
  • Technology (69%)
  • Travel (66%)
