Newman Granger, a second-year student at the VCU Brandcenter in Richmond, is the 2014 recipient of a $5,000 annual scholarship from Spurrier Media Group (SMG), a creative media shop with offices in the Richmond and D.C. markets. Since 2008, SMG has presented a total of $35,000 to deserving Brandcenter students who intend to pursue a career in the advertising field.
According to Emily Hale, director of development for VCU Brandcenter, the annual $5,000 financial gift from Spurrier Media Group demonstrates a level of scholarship support that is unprecedented for a small business in the advertising and media industry. “Spurrier Media Group sets an excellent example for other businesses to follow,” she said. “Thanks to Donna and her company, seven Brandcenter students have received a huge financial boost to help launch their careers.”
A native of Richmond, Granger took a somewhat circuitous path to the Brandcenter. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston in 2009 and then worked as a project manager for Technology Desking, a small British company with an office in NYC. After that position, he found employment on the digital management team at Edelman, one of the world’s largest public relations firms.
Donna Spurrier, president of Spurrier Media Group and a Brandcenter guest speaker, noted, “We love helping talented students like Newman get a world-class education at the VCU Brandcenter. As a member of the next generation of advertising and branding professionals, he is destined for success in this fast-paced and challenging industry.”
