The Optical Society (OSA) named Tracy Schario, shown above, its chief external relations officer. Schario will provide strategic direction on government and public relations and institutional branding. This includes managing public relations programs for the organization’s scientific journals, international conferences and trade shows and its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education outreach and advocacy efforts. She will also support the organization’s centennial programs in 2016. Schario previously directed advocacy communications for the clean energy portfolio at The Pew Charitable Trusts and served as spokesperson for George Washington University. Her experience includes corporate management at Strategic Communications Group Inc., community relations at the U.S. Embassy in Manila and government relations at the National Utility Contractors Association. Schario also was on the adjunct faculty of George Washington University for more than four years and served as president of PRSA-NCC in 2006.
And, OSA added Rebecca Andersen as PR director. Previously, she was director of public relations at Coriant, and she is an adjunct professor of integrated marketing communications at West Virginia University. Andersen was president of PRSA-NCC in 2014. According to Schario, Andersen “brings 15+ years of optics and photonics industry experience and knows many of the members personally. Plus she’s strategic, savvy and skilled. She has been instrumental in helping rebuild the PR team at The Optical Society.”
