SEO tactics for 2023

In 2023, SEO is going to stand for Stretch-Energize-Optimize. If organizations want to see results, they will have to stretch their strategies and adapt to new technologies and platforms, energize teams to find an edge for their business, and optimize everything (that one is evergreen).

I think smart companies will invest in SEO and high quality content, giving themselves an even greater advantage in the verticals in which they compete. A lot of VC-backed companies are going through a retrenchment of all marketing expenses, and that’s going to hurt organizations in the long run. People still want and need content to inform and entertain. Meeting that need in 2023 and attracting more customers to your table is going to take new approaches, not a continuation of the status quo.

One thing we started to see at the end of last year is that AI is going to bring renewed attention to SEO. Companies marketing this technology are promising high rankings and lots of traffic through simplified content creation and easy workloads. My prediction is that while AI is very effective in many other areas, it isn’t going to be true that AI content = lasting traffic. Have fun, play around with it, and see if it can be part of your strategy, but don’t expect it to be a magic bean.

With Google’s relationship with Wikipedia getting closer (it’s now paying to better repurpose content), we’ll continue to see a heavy emphasis on Wikipedia in search results everywhere. This means organizations need to keep a consistent eye on all Wikipedia pages, categories, and lists that mention them, and this includes any foreign language Wikipedias. Outdated information on Wikipedia will have far-reaching effects.

To manage everything, make sure your team is well equipped and communicate regularly. As long as we continue to depend on search engines, SEO will remain a cornerstone of digital marketing success. No matter our industry, we can’t be afraid of SEO, nor can we be complacent. If you want to drive growth this year, investing in a few avenues that promise the greatest advancement of your brand’s goals is good for business.
