By Michael DeMos
CEO, The C-360 Agency
I can’t tell you how many times a day I look at my email and say, “This requires a phone call!”
Often when I do call, I hear surprise on the other end. “Wow, you actually call people!” Or I get the opposite of surprise: “I knew you would call.”
Some days it feels like talking on the phone is a lost art.
Relationships are the most important pillar of my life and business, and you can’t build either of them with email alone. While I love email for quick and simple items, I am not a big fan. There is so much that is lost in email, and it often feels so impersonal.
If a topic requires more than two sentences or two replies, I just pick up the phone. And that’s how I train my team.
We had a new client tell us last week that they hired an agency for a crisis PR situation, and the agency took three days to get back to them … and it was by email. Talk about not using the right tool for the job!
It’s one of the reasons that I like running a smaller agency with a select list of clients. While we don’t specialize in one industry, we do focus on clients who are interested in long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.
I have built my entire career on being responsive, which in turn builds trust and relationships. And my strongest tool by far is picking up the phone.
