Capitol Communicator is running “Up Close and Personal” profiles of communicators in the mid-Atlantic. In this profile we feature Jefferson Liu. Photography for the series is by award-winning Cade Martin, wardrobe styling by Pascale Lemaire and Sybil Street for THE Artist Agency; and hair and makeup by Patti D Nelson, Janice Kinigopoulos and Lori Pressman for THE Artist Agency.
Jefferson, please provide us a short bio.
I am a D.C.-area native and began my career as a graphic designer. In the past 20 years, I have produced award-winning work for Volkswagen, Bethesda Softworks, Warner Brothers, Delta, World Wildlife Fund, Ubisoft, and more. Currently, I am a Group Creative Director at AKQA on the PlayStation account.
Are you involved in any other organizations?
I do my best to attend local fundraisers and events but I am not currently affiliated with any organizations.
What are the things you are most proud of?
She’s not really a thing, but I recently rescued a puppy. Her name is Florence and I’m pretty sure I’d take a bullet for her.
Who are your personal role models?
My mother and sister have always been my guiding lights in life. They’ve shaped who I am and more importantly, who I want to be.
Did they offer professional advice that helped you in your career?
Yes and no. They are a constant reminder of the importance of balance, that there is life after work and over-indexing on either can be unhealthy and unnatural. Working hard has never been a problem for me, but the constant struggle to maintain balance has forced me to work smarter and more efficiently.
What professional advice do you have for others?
Stop getting your advice and soundbites from social media. The clever one-liners and drive-by articles are only profound because they lack nuance and depth. Meaningful advice doesn’t come in the form of a blanket statement…including this one.
What’s on your Spotify and Pandora playlists?
The new Poliça album is a masterpiece.
What’s your favorite restaurant?
It was Makoto before they shut down. My meal at Pineapples and Pearls was very impressive.
Is there anything else you would like us to know about you?
I don’t like carrots.
