2026 Prediction: PR and communications industry’s consolidation accelerates “dramatically”

By Robert Udowitz, Senior Associate, Gould+Partners
In the M&A marketplace, 2026 will be remembered as the year the PR and communications industry’s consolidation accelerated dramatically, but only for the agencies that were truly ready and appropriately prepared – financially, operationally, and strategically – to justify the highest valuation, enabling them to exit with the most favorable terms.
The agencies that treated 2024–2025 as their “pre-sale sprint”—cleaning books, derisking operations, and sharpening their strategic story—will achieve life-changing exits at peak-of-market valuations. Those that wait until a buyer knocks will discover that, in this cycle, the knock never comes—or comes with terms that feel like a fire sale.
The victors will largely exit to the new wave of consolidators, where AI will be the great equalizer—private-equity-backed “PR platforms,” global marketing services holding companies, and tech-enabled marcom roll-ups—that are sitting on record dry powder specifically earmarked for PR and communications assets. Again, AI will join PE platforms as “innovation engines.”
