What a Graduating Marketer Sees That Most Practitioners Miss

By Geoff Livingston

I recently caught up with Jonathan Harris, president of AMA-GMU at George Mason University and about-to-be marketing grad, at a DC marketing tech talk on AI and the customer journey. What followed was a candid conversation worth sharing.

Jonathan transferred from film school to business school, which gives him an unusual lens. He sees AI not as a threat but as a production equalizer — the gap between a well-resourced team and a solo creator is narrowing fast, especially in short-form video.

On copywriting, he’s measured: AI handles the mechanical work well, and he uses Claude himself for script feedback and campaign ideation. But he doesn’t think it replaces the authentic human voice that great advertising has always required.

His advice to peers entering the market is the most useful thing in the conversation: don’t hide your entrepreneurial activity because it isn’t profitable yet. It shows ambition. It shows you work without deadlines. That’s exactly what employers are looking for.
