Recently I celebrated my 50th birthday. Fifty years is a long time, filled with countless experiences, lessons, and memories that have shaped me into the person I am today. Turning 50 is not just a number; it’s a journey marked by experiences, memories and the presence of everything that makes a life truly extraordinary.
This year has been filled with lots of “5” milestones:
My husband turned 55 in April
My son turned 15 in July
October 15 will be 15 years of Spotted MP (Marketing + Public Relations), more parties to come!
And now I turned 50.
I should play the lottery or something.
As I reflect on this milestone, it’s easy enough for folks to get down on themselves when this number hits, but a brighter perspective can make you realize 50 is a time of celebration and acceptance. If you’ve been lucky enough to live a full and enjoyable life, you are fortunate.
Many people tell jokes about turning 50, but funny stuff aside, there are a lot of benefits, as well. I did a full list of benefits but here are my Top 10.
#1 You’re less fearful.
#2 You’re not afraid to have opinions.
#3 You know yourself. You are more at peace.
#4 You have a greater appreciation of life.
#5 You stop caring what other people think.
#6 You have a lifetime of wisdom to help you make decisions.
#7 You still can learn a new skill and try new things.
#8 You know that eating right and exercise are the best medicine.
#9 “No.” is a complete sentence.
#10 Your boundaries are ever more important and folks must respect them.
And a bonus benefit, you can wear all the glitter and leopard you want. You do you.
As a CEO of a Black-owned/women-owned business, I am grateful to my industry colleagues and mentors who have shaped my professional path. In the DC region, I am in a small, yet mighty, group of Black women-owned communications agencies in the area. My industry colleagues and mentors guidance, challenges and collaborations have not only contributed to my growth, but have also enriched my life with purpose and meaning. Thank you for simply taking my calls. The challenges we’ve overcome together have made victories even sweeter, and the opportunities I’ve had to gain are priceless.
Last week, Sheila Johnson, Founder & CEO of the Salamander Collection in which I represent her two DC-area properties, said this to me “Maurisa your 50’s will be your best years yet. They were my favorite years and I had a blast. Go get it and enjoy it all.”
So here’s to 50. And I am just getting started.
