DCRTV reports that legendary WMAL radio’s all-night man Bill Mayhugh had died. According to DCRTV, Mayhugh went to work at WMAL in 1962 and “was famous for hosting the Leukemia Radiothon which grew from an in-studio fundraiser to an all-night marathon at area hotels. He led the way for current mega fundraisers for leukemia raising millions of dollars with the help from area unions like Washington Building Trades and the Bartender’s Ball. ” In addition, Mayhugh was a founder of the Marine Corps Marathon. Former WMAL president Andy Ockershausen told DCRTV that Mayhugh established a relationship with night-time listeners of WMAL unlike any other radio personality.
